- E. coli Seed Scare Hits the Netherlands
June 28, 2011 — Dutch Health Minister Edith Schippers is advising consumers in the Netherlands not to eat raw rocket (arugula), mustard, or fenugreek seed sprouts for the time being, according to Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
The warning is a result of the French government's withdrawal of the sprouts from sale after people in the Bordeaux area were infected with E. coli O104:H4 bacterium, which is the same type that was responsible for the recent outbreaks in Germany.
The Dutch Food and Commodities Authority (nVWA) is investigating whether batches of the seeds in question have been transported to the Netherlands, although the E. coli bacterium has not yet surfaced there.
